Jeremyville about the Converse he created.
Below is a section of the interview.
How
did you get involved with the Converse 1Hund(red) project?
One day a box arrived at my studio and it had a blank shoe in it, and
an invitation from Converse to paint the Chuck Taylor shoe, and send it
back to them. 6 months later it was made into a shoe, and along the way
I was consulted in terms of production changes to the shoe and modifying
the art slightly to work with their factory. I'm stoked as to how it's
turned out, sometimes these sorts of projects don't turn out the way you
imagine, but in this case, I was 100% happy with the outcome, and the
Converse team I worked with. The art director was Damion Silver.
What was your inspiration for your shoe?
First and foremost I wanted it to be a shoe I'd personally wear, in a
colour and style I hadn't seen before. Something I'd want to add to my
collection of shoes, which is a big ask, as I have a LOT of sneakers in
my collection.
So I imagined this light pink and black shoe being worn with like a pair
of black skinny jeans, and a faded Mickey tee and 70's sunglasses. For
a project like this, that involves an element of fashion, I usually think
of a style or look I'm into and create something that fits that.
What was your process – from design to execution- and how
did your artwork translate onto a pair of Converse as your canvas?
It started at my painting table, I put down the light pink base and then
created character shapes in black ink, that I wanted to keep fairly abstract,
as I wanted them more as a pattern of characters coming up from the shoe,
nothing too cartoony. I think my character shapes are fairly recognisable,
so I kept it pared back and suggestive, rather than too obvious or detailed.
I also kept the colour palette to just light pink, a darker pink, and
black. Simple is best.
There was then the feedback from Converse as to what was possible production
wise, and some words I had initially included in the design were not able
to be used, so they were removed. Converse then made the whole design
embossed on a leather finish, so it has a real sweet tactile feel to it.
They actually really enhanced the design, which is usually not the case
with some companies interpreting your art!
